Hearing Solutions at Byrom Audiology in 2026
17 May 2026
When most people think about hearing care, they picture a fairly standard journey - a hearing test, followed by a behind-the-ear hearing aid, followed by adjustments over time. For many clients, that's exactly the right pathway, and it works well.
But hearing loss isn't a single condition, and standard hearing aids aren't the right solution for everyone. Some people have conductive hearing loss that doesn't respond well to conventional amplification. Some have single-sided deafness that needs an entirely different approach. Some have hearing aids that work well at home but leave them struggling in busy social environments. And some want a solution that nobody around them can see.
At Byrom Audiology, we offer a range of specialist hearing solutions designed for exactly these situations - and many of them are genuinely different from what you'll find on the high street. Here's an overview of what's available, who each option is for, and how to know which might suit you.
Lyric - the only 100% invisible, extended-wear hearing aid
For clients who want hearing support without anyone knowing they're wearing it, Lyric is in a category of its own. Positioned deep inside the ear canal, Lyric is completely invisible - even at close range. It uses your ear's natural anatomy to deliver clear, natural sound and accurate localisation cues, which means the world sounds the way it should rather than the way a hearing aid thinks it should.
What makes Lyric genuinely distinctive is that it's worn continuously, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for months at a time. There are no batteries to charge, no fiddly insertion every morning, no removing it before bed. Once it's fitted, you simply get on with your life. Lyric can even be worn during exercise and showering, provided you take reasonable care to keep your ears dry.
Sizing, fitting and programming take around an hour, after which volume and settings can be adjusted using the discreet SoundLync™ tool. Lyric can be self-removed if needed.
For clients in client-facing roles, in industries where appearances matter, or simply for those who want their hearing loss to be entirely their own business, Lyric remains one of our most popular options.
Med-El AdHear - a non-surgical alternative to bone conduction implants
For clients with conductive hearing loss or single-sided deafness (SSD), traditional hearing aids often aren't the answer. The conventional alternative has been a surgical bone conduction implant - but for many people, the prospect of surgery, recovery time, or skin-penetrating implants is a significant barrier.
The Med-El AdHear changes this. It's the only bone conduction system that stays securely in place with a simple adhesive adapter - no surgery, no implants, and no uncomfortable headbands. A discreet audio processor worn behind the ear picks up sound from your environment, converts it into gentle vibrations, and transmits those vibrations through the adhesive adapter directly to your inner ear via the skull.
The result is clear, natural hearing - delivered immediately, without recovery time.
AdHear is particularly well-suited to:
- Conductive hearing loss - often caused by chronic ear infections, glue ear, or middle ear conditions
- Single-sided deafness - restoring a sense of "surround sound" awareness
- NHS waiting list support - providing an immediate, high-quality solution while clients await long-term NHS assessments or surgical procedures
We provide a comprehensive, end-to-end service for the Med-El AdHear system for £5,000, including clinical assessment, expert fitting and personalised programming, and ongoing support.
For clients who cannot or prefer not to undergo surgery, or who find conventional hearing aids unsuitable, it's a genuinely life-changing option.
Roger Technology - for the situations hearing aids find hardest
Even excellent hearing aids have limits. Noisy restaurants, group conversations, lectures, meetings, and conversations at distance remain among the most difficult environments for any hearing aid to handle on its own. This is where Roger Technology comes in.
Roger devices are intelligent wireless microphones designed to work alongside your existing hearing aids or cochlear implants, dramatically improving speech clarity in challenging environments. Unlike older FM systems, Roger uses a digital wireless standard for clear, seamless audio transmission.
We offer three main Roger options at our clinics:
- Roger Select (£1,600) - A multi-beam microphone designed for group conversations. It automatically identifies the active speaker and reduces surrounding noise, making it ideal for social gatherings, family meals, and meetings.
- Roger On (£1,600) - A versatile directional microphone that adapts to different listening situations. It can be placed on a table, clipped to clothing, or held in the hand, and delivers exceptional sound quality in both one-on-one and group settings.
- Roger Clip-On Mic (£800) - A discreet personal microphone worn by the speaker, transmitting their voice directly to your hearing aids. Perfect for lectures, presentations, or one-to-one conversations in noisy environments.
The key benefits are consistent across the range: enhanced speech clarity, reduced background noise, and less listening fatigue. For clients who feel their hearing aids work well at home but let them down in social situations, Roger Technology often makes the difference between attending an event and genuinely enjoying it.

Fine-tuning and servicing - making sure your hearing aid actually works for you
Not every client who walks through our door is looking for something new. A significant part of what we do is making sure existing hearing aids - whether fitted by us, by another private clinic, or by the NHS - are properly adjusted to the person wearing them.
If your hearing aid has ended up abandoned in a drawer, you're not alone. Hearing aids are prescribed based on your lifestyle and your specific hearing loss, which means a device that works beautifully for a friend or relative may not be right for you. Each device needs to be correctly programmed and adjusted for your ears, not someone else's.
Our fine-tuning and servicing process uses Real Ear Measurement - a clinically verified method of measuring how sound actually behaves inside your specific ear canal with the hearing aid in place. Research consistently shows that hearing aids adjusted using Real Ear Measurement deliver far superior results for speech understanding compared to relying on the manufacturer's default settings.
It's something every hearing aid fitting should include, but unfortunately doesn't always. At Byrom Audiology, it's standard practice.
If you're an NHS hearing aid wearer wondering whether your device could be working harder for you, or a private client whose hearing aids no longer feel right, please get in touch - we can help.
How to find the right option for you
The honest answer is that you don't need to work this out on your own. Every appointment at Byrom Audiology starts with a proper conversation about your hearing, your lifestyle, and the situations that matter to you. From there, Peter and Nicole - both Registered Hearing Aid Dispensers - can talk through which of these options might be appropriate, and what each would involve in practice.
There are no NHS waiting lists at our clinic, and no GP referral required. We see clients at our Thornbury Hospital and Dore locations, and our role is simply to help you find the right solution for the way you live.
