Common Ear & Hearing Conditions in Children

Many childhood ear problems are incredibly common – but that doesn’t mean they should be ignored. Early detection and management can make a big difference.

Otoscopy

Otitis Media

(Middle Ear Infections)

A very common childhood condition that can cause pain, fever and temporary hearing loss.

Glue Ear

(Otitis Media with Effusion)

A build-up of fluid behind the eardrum that often affects speech and hearing. It’s especially common between the ages of 6 months and 4 years.

Did you know around 80% of children will have at least one episode of glue ear by age 10?

Otitis Externa

(Middle Ear Infections)

Outer ear infections caused by trapped moisture. Common in active children or those who love the pool.

Earwax (Cerumen) Buildup

(Middle Ear Infections)

Children often produce more wax or accidentally push objects into their ears, leading to discomfort or muffled hearing.

Our gentle and child-safe wax removal service can help.

Microsuction
Tympanometry

Tympanic Membrane Perforation

(Middle Ear Infections)

Tears or holes in the eardrum due to infections, pressure, or injury. Can affect hearing and needs close monitoring.

Congenital Ear Malformations

(Middle Ear Infections)

Some children are born with differences in the shape or function of their ears – early assessment helps plan the best care.

Eustachian Tube Dysfunction

(Middle Ear Infections)

When the tubes that help drain the ears don’t work properly, it can cause blockages, pressure, and discomfort.

Our Approach to Children’s Hearing Care?

At Byrom Audiology, we take a warm, family-friendly approach designed to make children feel safe, relaxed and even have some fun during their visit.

We understand that a clinical setting can feel intimidating, especially for little ones - so everything we do is adapted with care and understanding.

Here’s what makes our approach different:

  • Clear, simple explanations

We avoid technical jargon and always explain what we’re doing in language that’s easy for both children and parents to understand.

  • A calm, child-friendly environment

Our rooms are quiet, welcoming and free from unnecessary distractions - and we always have toys and fidget tools on hand to help keep children at ease.

  • Family involvement

We always welcome parents or carers into the appointment, so your child feels supported and you’re part of the process from start to finish.

  • Flexible testing based on age & development

From toddlers to teens, we adapt every appointment to suit your child’s developmental level, attention span and communication style.

  • A little fun!

We use play-based techniques and light humour to make appointments enjoyable – we like for your child to leave with a smile!
