Say Goodbye to Ear Blockages with Byrom Audiology

Are you troubled by earwax build-up? Finding it harder to hear? Don't fret, it's a common issue. Normally, earwax naturally clears itself out. But if it's causing discomfort, it's time for some gentle removal.

Typically, earwax should naturally dislodge, often while you're resting at night. But if the blockage persists beyond five days, starts to feel uncomfortable or annoying, or you find your hearing is affected, it could signal a deeper issue like infection.

It’s always better to catch any build-up of wax early with a proper evaluation and treatment, so why not book an appointment with one of our audiologists? Nicole, Chloe or Peter will be pleased to help.

What causes wax build-up?

Ear Wax is a completely natural substance and build-up of ear wax is very common, affecting one in 10 children, one in 20 adults, and more than one-third of older people.

  • Wax may build up if it has been pushed down the canal by cotton buds, hearing aids, hair clips or other implements.
  • Cotton buds can also irritate the ear canal and strip it of its natural oils, which can cause it to feel itchy.
  • Sometimes wax may build up if it’s very dry, or if you have a narrow canal or a hairy ear canal.
  • If water gets into the eardrum during swimming or showering, the wax can expand, giving a ‘blocked’ feeling in the ear and increasing the perception of tinnitus.

How do I know if I have ear wax build-up?

Even a small lump of natural wax lodged in the ear can cause discomfort and you may feel any or all of the following:

  • Pressure in your ear
  • Temporary hearing loss
  • Dizzy or nauseous
  • Pain in one or both ears
  • Itchiness in your ear canal
  • Tinnitus

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms, ear wax removal treatment is quick and painless, so call us to book an appointment and we’ll have you back to ‘normal’ in no time!

For easy wax removal, use olive oil drops for 2-3 days before your ear wax removal appointment!

How do I remove Ear Wax?

If the wax isn’t causing any problems, then its best left alone. The ear is self-cleaning and the wax should naturally clear, so it’s unnecessary to try and remove the wax yourself. If it is causing discomfort or irritation, then removal may be sensible.

Every ear is different and wax build-up can occur in numerous shapes and forms, which means different techniques need to be used for its safe removal.

Some people try safe home remedies, such as olive oil drops, dissolving drops, Hopi candles or other methods, which can be effective in the short term.

As professional audiologists, however, we know ears! And we prefer to use more thorough treatments to get to the crux of the matter, so you leave our clinics more comfortable then when you arrive!
